A Fortunate Encounter: Graphic Short Story
Client: Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition
Date: May 2022

About the client:
The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) is a non-profit organization that empowers communities by raising awareness of breast health issues through survivorship support services, outreach, and education, in order to facilitate the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. DBCC encourages everyone to share and advocate breast health awareness. We help those with low incomes and those with little or no insurance to receive free or reduced-cost care.
The creative challenge:
Based on a previous pilot program, DBCC was looking for an artist to redesign and illustrate a modern booklet as a part of their 2022 Chanpyons Project and 2023 Campeona Project. The "Chanpyons" program caters to a Haitian Creole audience and the “Campeonas” program serves a Spanish-speaking/Latina audiece.
DBCC conducted several case studies with Haitian and Latina focus groups in early 2023. The goal of the project is to recruit women in these demographics to help encourage other women to get their mammograms in order to receive treatment at an earlier stage where we are seeing much better treatment options and outcomes.
